YMCA Guides & Princesses Hosts Father-Daughter Sweetheart Dance

DSC_1630The South Montgomery County Y Guides and Princess Program is hosting their annual Father-Daughter Sweetheart Dance on Saturday, February 8, 7:00 – 10:00pm at the Creekside YMCA. Create lasting memories with your daughter! The evening will include a balloon drop, fun music, line dancing, limbo, refreshments, photo booth and much more.  The community is invited. Registration is $10 per person through Feb. 7th. Pre-registration is required.

The Sweetheart Dance is one of many parent-child activities offered through the Y Guides and Princess Program. Families today are pulled in many directions.  Time and money are at a premium, with an increasing number of families trying to do more with fewer resources.  Kids have increasingly complex school and extracurricular schedules as well.  That’s why the South Montgomery County YMCA offers Adventure Guides, a program designed to take parents and children on an exciting journey of discovery.

For young children, life is a wondrous journey with the parent as a guide.  That is the premise of Y Guides and Princesses, an exciting parent-child experience.  This life-changing program is an enhanced and updated version of YMCAs’ earlier, time-honored Indian Guides and Indian Princesses parent-child programs. A program that began in 1926.  It celebrates family, nature, community, and plain old-fashioned fun, infused with the YMCA’s five character values of caring, honesty, respect, responsibility and faith. The program is structured so that one parent spends time with his or her child, building a relationship that is sure to make them “friends forever.”  Indeed, “friends forever” is the program motto.  Typical activities that the Y Guides take part in include: games, crafts, songs, stories, skits and outdoor pursuits, such as camping, hiking and swimming.

To register for the dance, stop by any YMCA location in The Woodlands: 6145 Shadowbend Place, 8100 Ashlane Way, and 6464 Creekside Forest Drive. To learn more, please call 832-698-1283 or visit http://www.ymcahouston.org/south-montgomery-county!

YMCA holiday camps offer children excitement and parents peace of mind

School will soon be out for the Thanksgiving Holiday Break! Parents want to ensure their children are safe, supervised and engaged in activities that keep their minds and bodies active when school is out for the holidays. Children eagerly anticipate the free time and simply want to have fun! The South Montgomery County Creekside YMCA offers more than one solution to keep everyone happy this coming season.

With licensed holiday camps at the Y, parents don’t need to leave their children in front of television sets during holiday break. Children have the opportunity to play and participate in character building activities, arts and crafts, sports, games and so much more under the watchful eyes of caring role models.

Holiday Adventure Camp at the CreeksideYMCAOutdoorAdventureCenter gives kids the opportunity to experience all the fun and excitement of summer camp during their holiday break. For students, K-6th grade, kids will enjoy outdoor education, hiking, songs and skits, arts/crafts, adventure tower, giant swing, games, sports and much more. Care is provided 7am – 6:30pm. Pre-registration is required. Holiday camp is available Nov. 25, 26 and 27.

The Y is addressing critical gaps in health and education that cause kids to be at risk for childhood obesity. YMCA camp programs provide a wealth of opportunity for kids to get active through play. Experts recommend that kids engage in at least 60 minutes of physical activity, including active play, each day. Studies show that kids who consistently engage in play are happier and healthier and develop and enhance a variety of skills including motor skills, social skills, problem solving, and creativity. Kids who get 60 minutes of physical play also tend to have higher self-esteem and perform better academically.

YMCA holiday camp reinforce the Y’s core values of respect, responsibility, honesty, caring and faith.  Spaces are still available.  Visit http://www.ymcahouston.org or 832.698.1283
