This is the way it was supposed to end.

Four years ago, Courtney Eckenrode and Kelly Quinn walked away from the state tournament as freshmen with silver medals around their necks.

It took awhile for Eckenrode, Quinn and The Woodlands to get back. They lost in the second round as sophomores and in the region semifinals the next year.

But they returned with an even better team – the best in the country – and finished what they started. The top-ranked Highlanders swept San Antonio Churchill 25-22, 26-24, 25-17 at the Curits Culwell Center to capture the Class 5A state championship Saturday night.

This Weekend…Strut Your Stuff for Breast Cancer

SprintThe Woodlands, Texas (Sept 9, 2013): This weekend hundreds of women… and men… will grace the sidewalks of Market Street to sprint in high heels to raise money for Breast Cancer. On Saturday, September 14th, The Breast Cancer Charities of America (BCCA) will host their 4th Annual iGoPink Stiletto Sprint presented by Clear Choice Orthodontic Associates.

Many area businesses and residents have teamed up to run in pumps for a purpose. Sue Gold, of The Gold Mortgage Team and Cherry Creek Mortgage Company, was spotted practicing in the hallways of her office. Lauren Olson, and the staff at Radiance Advanced Skin and Body Care, are ready for the second year in a row; and Xtreme Lashes ladies have started applying pink lashes and body bling. This 50 yard dash is the most high-heeled fun The Woodlands has ever experienced!

Race divisions for Top Stiletto Sprinter exist for women and, most entertaining, for men. There is also a sneaker sprint for those less inclined to run in 3” heels and a mini sneaker sprint for the little “Divas in Training” and “Speed Demons”. Awards will be given to the winners of the races as well as Best (Pink) Dressed and Top Fundraiser.

Other sponsors include: Northside FIAT, Radiance Advanced Skin and Body Care, Arnold Wealth Advisory Group, LLC, Market Street, Xtreme Lashes Eyelash Extensions, KROGER, 104.1 KRBE, Fox 26, review it Magazine, Community Impact News, Woodlands Online, Texas Community Referral Network and Lone Star Radio.

Breast Cancer Charities of America (BCCA) is a non-profit organization with headquarters in The Woodlands, Texas. Funds raised will benefit The Breast Cancer Charities of America’s primary program services including the Help Now Fund (paying the rent and utilities of women going through breast cancer), their University Education Program, and funding for non-invasive breast cancer treatment research.

Annual Event Rolls Over into 5th Year

Canine superstars performing feats of brawn and brain will be highlights of Bridgeland’s “pet-acular” Howl-O-Ween Fest 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, at Oak Meadow Park, 17730 House Hahl Road.

Bridgeland Howl-O-WeenMutts Gone Nuts will have audience members howling and begging for more at the fifth annual Fido-and-family festival, as Scott and Joan Houghton try to outsmart their pack of mischievous rescue dogs in a show that includes thrilling stunts and impeccable comedic timing.  The husband-and-wife team works with as many as eight dogs on stage, all who have been handpicked for their lively personalities and athleticism among the 70 to 80 dogs the pair have fostered during the last decade.

Also on stage will be Kyra Sundance and her Weimaraner, Jadie, dubbed by Jay Leno as the “world’s smartest dog” after she “read” numerals during an appearance on the Tonight Show. The clever canine also will showcase her acrobatic ability and intelligence in an energetic display of dog tricks taken from Sundance’s best-selling book, “101 Dog Tricks.”

“We have a superb line-up of entertainment and activities planned for this year’s Howl-O-Ween Fest,” said Peter Houghton, vice president of master planned communities for Bridgeland. “We’ve also added another fundraising component to the event to further help the many rescue organizations affiliated with the festival.”

Kicking off this year’s Howl-O-Ween Fest is a new activity, a pup-and-people Ruff Run at Waterway Park. Entrants can choose to race a half-mile or one-mile course at 9 a.m. and can then take shuttles to Howl-O-Ween Fest. Creative attire is encouraged, as awards will be given for the best pet-and-owner costumes. Online registration is $25 and is available now at www.bridgelandlife.com. Race day registration will be $35 and begins at 8 a.m. at Festival Park. All proceeds benefit participating Howl-O-Ween Fest rescue groups, which include Cocker Spaniel Rescue of East Texas, Golden Retriever Rescue of Houston, Great Dane Rescue of Southeast Texas, Husky Haven, Lone Star Boxer Rescue, Texas Gulf Coast Boston Terrier Rescue, Pug Hearts and Boykin Spaniel Rescue.
