Houston ‘s iconic Wine & Food Week celebrates 10 magical years in 2014, drawing culinary masters and wine experts from around the world. Held June 2-8, Wine & Week’s gastronomic grandeur features scores of events with more than 500 wines, 50 restaurants, legendary wine producers and culinary personalities, and a vast collection of craft beers and gourmet food purveyors.
Wine education classes, chef demonstrations, cookbook author events, silent auctions, and casual to fine wine-and-dine experiences round out the week’s festivities. The region’s largest, most comprehensive epicurean extravaganza with more than 10,000 participants each year, Wine & Food Week features exceptional wine experiences for the novice to the enthusiast paired with delicacies created by some of America’s top chefs.

Wine & Food Week’s big three not-to-be-missed events include Thursday, June 5th’s H-E-B Wine Walk @ Market Street, a taste and stroll experience in a European-style center featuring wine and light bites at more than 30 tasting stations; Sips, Suds & Sliders, presented by The Woodlands Mall, a Texas-size celebration featuring live music, specialty beers, value wines and a gourmet slider competition on Friday, June 6; and Saturday, June 7’s ultimate adult evening: The Wine Rendezvous Grand Tasting & Chef Showcase, presented by Capital One Bank, where guests sample delectable cuisine and hundreds of wines as chefs representing more than 50 restaurants compete for Wine & Food Week’s Waterford Crystal Chef of Chefs Award and a $5,000 cash prize. To complete the evening, the epicurean experience culminates with the “Just Desserts” contest, a confectionary competition to crown the night’s dessert extraordinaire.

Squeaky the Robot Needs a New, Faster CPU! Who Will Build It?

Gatekeeper LogoOn Saturday, October 12 from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., The Woodlands Mall will welcome teams participating in North Houston’s BEST’s 2013 annual robotics competition. For the 2013 competition, called GAMEKEEPER, student teams were challenged to build CPUs that would get Squeaky, BEST’s original robot, the upgrades it needs to become Squeaky 2.0.

On the October 12 Demo Day at The Woodlands Mall, the teams will run their robots over a course to practice for the official game day which will be held the following weekend. During this Demo Day at The Woodlands Mall, the teams’ robots will compete in a game where a set of tasks have been defined. The robots may be required to perform a variety of tasks, such as removing “dangerous” materials, rescuing aliens or saving the world. The 2013 Demo Day will be held in the court near Nordstrom.

For GAMEKEEPER 2013, student teams from middle and high schools in Montgomery County and North Harris County were required to build CPUs in three stages: building logic gates from transistors, building integrated circuits from logic gates and then CPUs from integrated circuits. The materials needed to build the CPS were provided to each team free of charge.

North Houston BEST, a 501 c(3) organization, is one of the many hubs for Best Robotics Inc., which is an organization dedicated to fostering science and engineering among high school and middle school students throughout the country. Each year, a competition is held where students construct a robot from a limited set of materials. The North Houston BEST hub supports schools from the Montgomery County and North Harris County area. Cows Against Cancer

This October, Chick-fil-A cows in The Woodlands will be “Going PINK.” Ed Murray, franchise owner of Chick-fil-A Lake Woodlands Drive, The Woodlands Mall and Sawdust Road, has pledged to donate 100% of all proceeds from the sale of the infamous plush cows to iGoPink |The Breast Cancer Charities of America.

The Chick-fil-A cows will wear pink signs that read, “Reel Heeroz Eat Chikin” in support of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. They will be available for purchase while supplies last at three locations in The Woodlands for $5.00 during the month of October.

Funds raised will go towards The Breast Cancer Charities of America’s primary program services including the Help Now Fund (paying the rent and utilities of women going through breast cancer), the University Education Program, and funding for non-invasive breast cancer treatment research.
